Our life is our art. So its been said. And that's easy to see when
you look at the life of artist Hedy Wood. You will see a body of
work that can be found on canvas, paper, and six acres in the
mountains. Hedy paints. Not only in watercolor; but in all
mediums. Although she will tell you, "Watercolor is my first
love" She paints, not in one style, but in many. "None
of my work looks like the same person did it. I just like to try
different kinds of things". Hedy paints not one subject but
anything she wants. And that includes subjects from Pavarotti or
Madam Butterfly to Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians.
Landscapes, birds, cats and the Smokies, but she won't paint a
wildflower. Hed explains, "I've tried to but I don' feel like
I can do them justice. Only God can make a trees, as they say, and
I know what a real bloom looks like'. If anybody know, it's Hedy
Wood. Shes has spent almost a quarter of a century creating a
wildflower garden on land she and her late husband, George, named
Hedgewood. Six acres that lay on the west side of Chestnut Top
Mountain, opens into fields and follows a wet-weather creek into
bottomland. And everywhere there are flowers. Wildflowers.
Thousands of them. Bluets and Trillium. Sweet William and Phlox,
Solomon's Seal and Shooting Stars, lady's Slippers and Twin
Leaf...too many to name. And there are ferns, Over sixty types.
The darling little Walking Fern, the Hartford Fern, and the Purple
Stem Cliff Hanger. Then there are the Polypodies, the Cinnamon and
Royal Fern. Hedy's always had a garden. Even before she had land.
"When I lived in an apartment, I gardened in buckets,
pots and pans. I always had a flower and most generally, it was a
wildflower. They have always been my fascination. I believe I was
born with the love for them."
This
love has led her into schools and state and national park systems
sharing her knowledge of wildflowers. Her purpose is two-fold. To
teach the value and interest one single flower can hold. "Who
knows? There may be a future botanist out there I might
spark." And to establish the gardens of Hedgewood as a place
were the children of tomorrow will be able to see the wild beauty
of nature. "That is my main purpose." Although Hedy
passed away in 1993 her daughter Hope, an artist and wildflower
lover, continues to operate the gardens. Future plans for the
gardens includes The Garden of Hope. This garden will be
accessible to those who prefer level ground and weather
permitting, art of the late Hedy Wood will be on display
throughout the garden. Tour Programs, Native Plants and Art By
